Ernst Lindemann and the Battleship Bismarck

A Biography

Otto Ernst Lindemann (1894–1941) served as the singular commander of the German battleship Bismarck during its brief yet impactful service in World War II. Embarking on a naval career in 1913, Lindemann held a variety of roles before assuming command of Bismarck in 1940. Under his leadership, the battleship achieved notoriety by sinking the British battlecruiser HMS Hood, only to be sunk herself shortly thereafter, resulting in Lindemann's death. Posthumously awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, Germany's highest military accolade, his legacy remains inextricably linked to Bismarck's storied history. This biography delves into the life and leadership of a man at the helm of one of history's most iconic warships.
